Find a Fine Art Auction for Prints, Photos and More

When most people hear the words “fine art auction,” they immediately think of the great artists. But a fine art auction is for more than just paintings by Van Gough. After all, there are a very limited number of paintings by the painters of that caliber, and those paintings come on the market only occasionally. If that were the only kind of painting handled at a fine art auction, there would be little need for these companies.

But there’s more to fine art than just those early masters. In fact, there are hundreds of artists living today who do quality work. For those who are collectors of art, the options for works that would make a good addition to the collections are often found at fine art auctions.

Some people who are art collectors look only at specific kinds or pieces of art. There are fine art auction houses that are similarly specialized. Some of these deal only in limited edition prints while others have only photography. Some fine art auctions may offer a variety of mediums.

Typically, these fine art auction houses have some very specific rules for what can and cannot be offered for sale through their auctions. Mass productions or copies are usually excluded, as are amateur works that have no real value to the art collector. If you aren’t really sure of your ability to purchase quality art, take time to learn the rules of the fine art auction you plan to attend before you go. That will give you some direction as to what you can expect to find.

As with any auction, remember to do your research before you go. If you’re looking at something in particular, do what you can to verify the authenticity of the art. And, as is true with all art, don’t overlook what you like, even if it doesn’t seem to be the most popular items available.
